The Philippine American Foundation for Charities,
Inc. (PAFC) turned over $20,000 in funds raised to Gawad Kalinga
last Saturday, November 11, 2006 at Manila Café in Springfield,
VA. The funds are earmarked for the building of homes in Leyte
for those who were displaced and rendered homeless by the mudslide
that occurred early this year.
Ramon Magbanua and Ed Vicente, Jr. accepted the $20,000 check
on behalf of Gawad Kalinga and ANCOP USA. In his remarks, Magbanua
spoke about Gawad Kalingas mission of building sustainable
communities in the most depressed areas of the Philippines. These
funds will be put into good use in building homes for the poorest
of the poor. We are deeply very grateful. Vicente
promised to keep the community apprised of the building progress
of the village in Babascon, Leyte which will receive the funds
raised.
In April, PAFC partnered with Rodney Garcia, a lawyer, musician
and composer, to put together an inspired coalition of artists,
volunteers and funding partners to mount Leyte (A Benefit Concert
for the Mudslide Victims) held at the Bishop OConnell High
School in Arlington, VA. Leyte is a labor of love on several levels:
the organizers who planned and implemented the project, the artists
who performed and gave up paying gigs, and the members of the
stage crew who put in many hours to ensure every detail is taken
care of. You all made it happen. Lets do it again!exclaimed
Garcia as he thanked the musicians, the stage crew, and the sponsors.
