   The Right Place: Excerpt

Standing over him again, the officer bellows, "Get up!" Against the flashlight, Alfred sees his own shadown on the ground, bent over like a hunchback. As Alfred tries to push himself up from the asphalt, he feels dizzy. It's his vertigo. His hands press against the asphalt, and he slowly rises, while lights prance around his eyes and blood rushes in his head.

"Do you understand English? I said get up!"

Finally, Alfred props himself up, arms raised in the air. "I'll ... I'll ... I'm dizzy with this ... You have my ... my wallet ... my wallet ... You have my driver's license."

"What are yelping about? I don't understand what you're saying. What?"

"I'm ... be taking wallet ..."

"You don't understand how to speak proper English. Don't you know how to speak English?"
