EXCERPTS, HIGHLIGHTS AND SONGS FROM HACIENDA:
THE MUSICAL

HACIENDA

by Rodney Dakita Garcia

(A Musical Tribute to the spirit of EDSA)

FOURTEEN YEARS LATER.

Kristine and children sing in the park.

SANA
There's something in the rhythm of the song you sing
makes me want to get up and dance
there's something in the way you hold that old guitar
makes me want to take a chance
feel free sing with words you choose
deep inside your soul
you'll see--music takes control
Iparinig mo sanang mga kuwento mo
[Please tell your story, let your words be heard]
sa buong mundo
[by all this great big world]
huwag mo ikulong sa kalooban mo
ang damdamin mo
[Unlock the prison and release your heart
Let the music start!]
sana tayo'y magsaya
[Maybe, we'll love forever more]
kumilos ka sa tiyempo ng gitara
[dancing to the rhythm of your old guitar]
ikaw lang ang siyang hinihintay
[You're all that we've been waiting for!]
(instrumental and dancing-- then

Ano kayang paraan maging kaibigan mo
[I wonder how to make you be a friend of mine]
ito ang nais ko
[ I wish that this was so]
tayo tayo lang naman ang nan dito
[we have each other and there's little more]
sa isang mundo
[in this great big world]
sana
[maybe]
tayo'y magisa
[we can be as one]
hindi naman mahirap kung umawit ka
[it can't be any harder than to sing a song]
kapag ang iyong tinig
[let your music bring]
sinama sa pagibig
[a loving kind of thing]
tayo'y magsasama
[we'll be together one ]

Later, Chito the Sorbetero (ice cream vendor) tells thirteen year old Theresa how to survive the streets of Manila, after a nearly deadly encounter with the bullying Andujar.

Sorbetero to Theresa:
One of these days I'll take a stand. You'll see. It may be sooner than you know.
Theresa: All you can do is talk!

SORBETERO SONG

Magulo at dilikado
Ang bayan na ito
Mainit nga ang ulo mo
Huwag kang malito
Ganyan lang talaga
Ngumiti ka na lang basta
Ganyan ang ugaling Pilipino
It'a a time of much confusion
Theresa: Its a time to scream out loud
Sorbetero: But I'll smile through a revolution
If that should come about
Take it slow, let it go
Look for the lighter side in you
A very Filipino point of view.

Ref.
If you're hoping to find
Some peace of mind
In E De los Santos Avenue
Find a laugh
Crack a joke
Sing a song
light a smoke
Nothing is taboo
(hands her ice cream)
Keep the center firm and steady
And follow a basic rule
When the climate is hot and heavy
You got to play it cool.
Take it slow, let it go
Look for the light inside in you
A very Filipino point of view.

Chito and Theresa leave.
